General transport in Bhutan
The most convenient way to travel within Bhutan is to hire a vehicle and certified driver. Self-drive hire is not available in Bhutan. Options include:
- Hiring a vehicle and driver through a car rental company or tour operator
- Booking a local driver via the Druk Ride app (drukride.com), which also handles other local payments
- Arranging transport through your hotel
For longer distances between regions, Drukair and Bhutan Airlines also operate domestic flights connecting Paro to Yonphula (eastern Bhutan), Bumthang (central Bhutan), and Gelephu (south-central Bhutan). Bhutan’s mountain terrain can occasionally affect domestic schedules, check with your airline before travel.
Helicopter services for private hire are also available through Royal Bhutan Helicopter Services (rbhsl.bt), subject to weather conditions.
